For the past few weeks, College Board’s YouTube channel has been putting out daily review videos for Advanced Placement students to prepare for all of their exams at home. The College Board understands that this AP season is a stressful one in particular, with students now having to study and review on their own. These Youtube videos are made by other high school teachers from across the country, to help prepare in the best possible way to succeed on their exams.
Specifically, AP US History students have been working diligently to remember important dates, historical figures, and places in preparation for their exam. However, the learning of new material switched over to the review of older material for the new and modified AP exams this year. The College Board saw how receptive the students were to the online reviews and wanted to take advantage of the opportunity online learning presented. Learning can be fun and enjoyable when you have a teacher who feels passionately about what they do, which is why The College Board easily recruited a special guest to review with their APUSH students on Fri., May 1.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tony Award-winning actor and writer, is very passionate about early American History– so much so he wrote and starred in Hamilton, a Broadway Musical about America's first Treasury Secretary of the same name. He was an obvious and exciting choice for The College Board to talk to the students about their upcoming test and help prepare.
In a 45-minute discussion, Lin-Manuel Miranda revised with the APUSH students how to best include all the necessary information in their Document-Based Question (DBQ) for the upcoming exam, along with a fascinating background on his own interest for early American history and how what he has learned helped him to be successful. He answered interview-style questions, giving students a myriad of quick tips to help them on their DBQs.
The live video was a pleasant surprise for the students. Not only did they learn more about Lin-Manuel Miranda and how he was inspired to write the award-winning, perpetually sold-out musical Hamilton, but also getting pointers on how to write a cohesive and sophisticated DBQ.
