International Column 5/10: Angola

This week in our quest to learn about all the countries around the world, we are learning about the southern African nation of Angola.

Located in Central Africa, Angola encompasses tropical Atlantic beaches and a labyrinthine system of rivers and Sub-Saharan desert due to its varied terrain. It’s colonial history is enriched within it’s Portuguese inspired cuisine and landmarks. Angola is also enriched with an oil and diamond supply which is assisting its country through a rebirth after surviving a civil war for 27 years with Portugal. Fortunately, the country is now at peace and undergoing a complete transformation of streets, business, transportation and more.

Some intriguing facts that you may not have known about Angola are featured below!  

- Luanda (Angola’s capital) is the world’s most expensive city for those not native to the land. 

- Angola has been proclaimed as one of the world’s fastest growing economies between the years 1994 and 2004

- The capital, Luanda, is known to be the “Paris of Africa” due to the city’s sophisticated culture and vibe.

- Prothusesse is the official language of Angola and other languages spoken are Umbundu, Kimbundu, Kikongo, and Tchokwe.

- Nearly 70% of the population is under the age of 24.

- Has the highest mortality in the world.

- Angola is the birthplace of the dreadlock hairstyle. 

- Due to its civil war, there is a shortage of men, so it is not uncommon for men to have several wives.
